Outdoor Conservation Tips

Outdoor Tips

  • Don’t let the hose run while washing your car. Use a bucket of water and a quick rinse at the end. A better idea would be to take your car to an automated car wash that recycles the water. This will save 150 gallons each time.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks. Doing this once a week will save up to 600 gallons per month.

Outdoor Irrigation Tips

  • Water your lawn in the early morning before 7:00 a.m.  Upland does not allow watering before 10:00 p.m. or after 7:00 a.m. due to water waste from evaporation.
  • Water your lawn only when it needs it and adjust your sprinklers so that water lands on the lawn and not on the sidewalk. This will save up to 1,700 gallons per month.
  • Stop water runoff by allowing water to infiltrate.  Changing your watering – Instead of watering for 15 minutes, water for 5-8 minutes, wait 30 to 45 minutes and water again for 5-8 minutes.
  • Tune up your sprinklers on a monthly basis.  Gardeners, water pressure and garden pests can misalign and break sprinklers causing major water waste.
  • Do not water on windy days.  A heavy rain means you don’t have to water at all. Teach the family how to turn off an automatic sprinkler system in case a storm comes up during the sprinkling cycle.
  • Change your irrigation times seasonally or better yet, monthly.
  • Best of all – plant a California Friendly water-wise garden.  See our “California Friendly Landscape” section or visit Metropolitan Water Districts website at bewaterwise.com
